Do you need a tour for Todai-ji?

No. Normal visitors do not need a guide or a reservation. You walk in, pay at the ticket counter and follow the route on your own. A tour is an extra service, not a condition of entry, and it is worth it when you want background on the Great Buddha, the halls and the history of Nara.

The options below differ in length, price and what they include. The temple itself only charges for entry. Tours, audio guides and day trips are separate products, so check what each price covers before you pay.

The options in detail

What each one involves.

Visit on your own

You buy tickets at the Daibutsuden or the museum and pay in cash. The combined ticket for the Daibutsuden and the museum costs JPY 1,200 for adults and JPY 600 for children. The Hokkedo and the Kaidan-in cost JPY 800 for adults and JPY 400 for children each. Credit cards and travel agency coupons are not accepted at the counter.

Entry and opening hours โ†’

Audio guide

The guide comes with a touch pen, earphones and a map, and German is among the languages. You collect it behind the ticket entrance of the Daibutsuden. It is available from 10:00 to 17:00 from April to October and from 10:00 to 16:30 from November to March. It can be paused in bad weather. Individuals do not need to reserve; groups of 10 or more should. It is not an entry ticket.

The Great Buddha โ†’

Half-day bus tour

The Nara Kotsu bus tour visits the Daibutsuden, the Kasuga Taisha treasure hall and the Kofuku-ji national treasure museum. It leaves JR Nara at 9:10 and Kintetsu Nara at 9:15 and takes about 3 hours 40 minutes. In the 2026/27 season it runs on set days, for example Wednesdays from 4 November to 9 December 2026 and Fridays from 5 to 26 March 2027 (not 12 March). Do not expect a daily departure or a personal German-speaking guide.

Day trips from Kyoto and Osaka

Todai-ji is easy to reach by train without a tour. A trip makes sense when you want transport and a guide in one package. Check that the programme includes enough time at the temple and say whether you want the museum. For the trains, see Nara from Kyoto and Nara from Osaka.

What to check before you book

A few things to know before you plan.

Whether temple entry is included

Entry to the Daibutsuden, the Hokkedo, the Kaidan-in and the museum is charged per building. Ask whether your tour price includes these tickets or whether you pay at the counter in cash.

Time at the temple

A route that plans 50 minutes covers the main hall and the Great Buddha. The museum, the Nigatsudo and the Hokkedo on the eastern side need extra time and extra walking.

Nigatsudo โ†’

Photo rules and etiquette

Private photos are allowed on the route and in the Daibutsuden, but not group set-ups or tripods. Drawing and flashlights are not allowed inside, and photos are not allowed inside the Hokkedo, the Nigatsudo, the Kaidan-in or the museum. The site is a working Buddhist temple, so keep your voice low in the halls.

Group tickets

Groups of 30 or more pay reduced rates per paid building. Teenagers travelling on their own pay the full adult rate.

Todai-ji tours: frequently asked questions

Do I need a guide at Todai-ji?

No. Visitors walk in and follow the route without a guide or a reservation. A guide, an audio guide or a bus tour only adds background.

How much is the audio guide?

JPY 500 per person in 2026, with about 30 minutes of content and German among the languages. It is not an entry ticket, so you still pay to enter the Daibutsuden.

How long does a visit take?

A sample route plans about 50 minutes at the temple. Add time if you also visit the museum, the Hokkedo or the Nigatsudo, or if the grounds are busy.

Is there a bus tour that includes Todai-ji?

Yes. A half-day bus tour from JR Nara and Kintetsu Nara combines the Daibutsuden with Kasuga Taisha and Kofuku-ji for JPY 5,300 per adult and JPY 3,150 per child. It runs on set days in the 2026/27 season, so check the timetable.

Can I visit Todai-ji as a day trip from Kyoto or Osaka?

Yes. Kintetsu trains reach Kintetsu Nara in about 35 to 50 minutes, and the temple is a walk or short bus ride from there. Tours are an option, not a requirement.
